The Redeemed Christian Church of God

1909

In July 1909, Josiah Akindayomi was born into the Akindayomi family of Ondo State, Nigeria. Though he grew up surrounded by idol worshippers, his heart yearned for “the God who created the earth and everyone on it.”

1927

After years of searching, Josiah was baptized in the Church Missionary Society, taking his first step into the Christian faith.

1931

Still longing for a deeper walk with God, Josiah joined the Cherubim and Seraphim church. While there, he began to hear a quiet voice within him saying, “You will be my servant.”

1931–1938

For seven years, Josiah resisted the call. Each business venture he pursued failed, leaving him in debt and without peace. Brought to the end of himself, he surrendered, saying, “Lord, I will go wherever You want me to go.” The Lord confirmed His call through Jeremiah 1:4 to 10, Isaiah 41:10 to 13, and Romans 8:29 to 31, assuring Josiah that He Himself would provide for every need.

1941

Josiah was married, continuing to worship faithfully with the Cherubim and Seraphim church.

1947

In time, Josiah grew concerned that the Cherubim and Seraphim church was drifting from the true Word of God in some of its practices.

1952

Convinced it was time to step out in obedience, Josiah left the Cherubim and Seraphim church and began a house fellowship at Willoughby Street, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, called the Glory of God Fellowship. It began with nine members, but as news of God's miracles spread, the fellowship grew rapidly. In a vision, Josiah saw the words “The Redeemed Christian Church of God,” and though he could not read or write, he was supernaturally enabled to write them down. The Lord established a covenant with him, promising to meet every need of the church if her members would serve Him faithfully and walk in obedience to His Word. From this covenant, the Redeemed Christian Church of God was born. The church would later relocate to its present headquarters at 1 to 5 Redemption Way, Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

Early 1970s

The Lord spoke to Pa Akindayomi about his successor, revealing that this man would be young, educated, and not yet a member of the church. Pa Akindayomi held this word in his heart, waiting on God's timing.

1973

A young university lecturer joined the church. Enoch Adejare Adeboye, then teaching Mathematics at the University of Lagos, was recognized in the Spirit by Pa Akindayomi as the successor God had foretold.

1975

Enoch Adeboye was ordained a pastor of the church and served, among other roles, as one of the interpreters who translated Pa Akindayomi's sermons from Yoruba to English.

1980

Pa Josiah Akindayomi went home to be with the Lord at the age of 71. Before his passing, he sent for Pastor Adeboye and spent many hours sharing with him the details of God's covenant and His plans for the church.

1981

Following Pa Akindayomi's burial, his sealed pronouncement was read, formally appointing Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye as his successor. From that moment, the church entered a remarkable season of growth, with parishes multiplying across Nigeria and beyond.

1981–Present

By God's grace, the Redeemed Christian Church of God has grown to roughly 40,000 parishes across Nigeria and around the world, with parishes in Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Gambia, Cameroon, South Africa, England, Germany, France, the United States (Dallas, Tallahassee, Houston, New York, Washington, and Chicago), Haiti, and Jamaica. The Holy Ghost Service, an all-night miracle gathering held on the first Friday of every month at the Redemption Camp, draws an average attendance of 500,000 and is now hosted in many parts of the world, including the United Kingdom, India, the United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia, Dubai, Ghana, and the Philippines.
